Map Design
From traditional fantasy maps to modern cityscapes

Process
This traditional fantasy-style map was created digitally for an RPG game. Building off a rough hand-drawn concept I created varied coastlines and climate areas directed by frequent reviews with the game's creator. As the project progressed more details were added to create a classic and clean map. For this project, sparse detail was used strategically to promote the explorative gameplay and uncharted territory Skybound: Horizons is built around.
Process
The first RPG developed by Infinite Odyssey Games required a detailed map of the game's main city. To realize the full vision of the creators, this map went through several iterations as it was literally built up into three-dimensions. The map began as a 2D top-down plan view map based on a hand-drawn concept. Once the game designers approved the plan view, each building was turned into a 3D object and I worked closely with the game designers to adjust object heights and provide the final perspective considering zoom and rotation of the view. The final stages of this project added immense detail to the city, giving the buildings distinct character and adding life to the scene in the form of the jungle and flotilla. Throughout the final detail process, the game designers provided feedback regularly.

3-D Mapping
Working with 3-D modeling for map creation presents unique opportunities and benefits to game designers who are looking for a fully-realized and detailed graphic to accompany their gameplay. This format works well for urban and close-range environments and allows creators to watch their worlds come to life in front of them. The following gallery shows the many valuable perspectives a 3D map provides.
